The Organic Gardens began as a project of the Golden Bay Workcentre and was incorporated as the Te Wharerangi Trust in July 1991.

The site is leased from Puti Tito and her brother, Lawrence McBarron, from Taranaki.

 

Property  

Consists of 2.2 hectares in central Golden Bay. This includes:

  • Diversified Garden production area
  • Educational Worm Farm
  • Fruit and Nut Trees
  • Shelterbelt and Woodlot
  • Buildings and Structures
  • Access
  • Celebration Area and Herbal Ley
  • Amenity and Access Areas

 

Management Structure

The Te Wharerangi Trust Board consists of elected Trustees from the local community. The Trustees meet monthly, with the Manager and Project leaders. Regular planning days are also held to develop ongoing work plans.

The Gardens Manager oversees the day to day operation of the Community Gardens, including directing workers and trainees. The Trust also employs a Financial Manager.

 

Donations and Bequests

Te Wharerangi Trust has charitable status and is therefore able to receive donations and bequests to further its aims and objectives.

Donors can tag donations to specific areas of the Trust's activities.

     To work consistently towards financial self-sufficiency.

     To raise awareness of the existence and functions of Trust projects and encourage community
     participation.

Goal Five

     To enhance the capacity of individuals to gain new skills, inspiration and knowledge through association
     with Trust projects.
